1.What fuses do I need to buy extra when I connect solar panels in parallel?

When connecting four solar panels in parallel, you'll need three additional 10A in-line fuses, as you only receive one 10A in-line fuse in this kit.

2.What do I need to complete my off-grid solar power system?

Using this solar premium kit, you only need to purchase an inverter, batteries, battery inverter cables, and inverter fuses. For further inquiries about product specifications for your solar power system configurations, please contact customer service.

3.What does off-grid and on-grid mean?

On-grid simply means solar power equipment (array or solar panel) is connected to the electrical grid, while off-grid refers to systems that are not connected to the grid and therefore store the generated power for later use. Off-grid systems are not affected by grid blackouts.
4.Why is my solar panel under producing?

Solar panel performance may be hindered for a number of reasons. Most commonly environmental conditions such as indirect sunlight, temperature rise, cloudy sky, and dirt and stain build up on the top glass will cause a reduced power output.
5.How should I connect solar panels in my electrical circuit (series vs parallel)?

Solar panels can be connected in series or in parallel to meet your electrical circuit size and power demand. Connecting solar panels in series will have the effect of adding up their operating voltage output, while system current output will be the same as that for one panel. While, connecting solar panels in parallel will have a different effect; individual panels operating current output will add up to be the system output current, while system output voltage will be the same as the output voltage of one solar panel. To meet the optimum power output and system rating for your power system, you can use both parallel and series connections.
6.How many solar panels do I need?

The best way to gauge how many solar panels you need, is to understand and define the power load needed from this system. Power is measured in Watts, and capacity is commonly measured in Watt-hours (multiplying power output in watts by the required number of hours of operation multiplied by a safety factor of 1.5-2). Therefore, it is wise to size your battery bank first based on the minimum required capacity, and accordingly decide how many panels or how much power input is needed.
7.Can I add more solar panels to the Rover 40A and expand my system power output?

Yes, more solar panels can be added to this system to increase the power output. The Rover 40A has a maximum PV input current of 40A, maximum PV input voltage of 100VDC, and maximum input solar power of 520W at 12V or 1040W at 24V. You can wire more solar panels in series / in parallel to achieve larger power output, however you are limited by the maximum input voltage and current the charge controller can handle. It is safer to build a system operating at around 90% of the rated voltage and current to ensure there is a tolerance for any system overvoltage or overcurrent.
8.Will this solar kit power my AC unit?

In order to determine what size solar kit is appropriate, you must first define the total load to be expected of the solar power system. Most manufacturers will publish a specification sheet of the AC unit online and will include a nameplate sticker on the AC body. Both can be used to determine the actual power rating of the AC. BTU is a common measuring unit for energy in AC and water heater products, however we are intrested in the energy rate, or simply power. Power will be listed in units of Watts, and can be used to determine the total load resulting from running the intended AC unit. Multiply the power rating recorded in watts by the total number of hours of operation intended, to obtain the total watt-hours. Divide the total watt-hours by the peak sun hours in the location of installation, and multiply by a safety factor of 1.5-2, to obtain the total number of watts your panels should produce to power the air conditioner load. The total power load can be divided by the power output of one panel to obtain the number of panels needed.
9.When do I need an inverter?

If you intend to use this solar power kit as a power supply for home appliances (e.g. coffee maker, TV, etc.), then you will need an inverter to convert the output voltage from a VDC system to a 120V AC output socket. Renogy offers a variety of inverter products to suit your unique system and meet your power demand.

Easy installation and works as intended.

Posted by Ward on Jul 15th 2023

I installed this 400 watt rated system two weeks ago. The panels are on the pilot house roof of my powerboat connected in series. I installed the supplied 10A fuse. The Rover MPPT charge controller is in the engine room. The system charges a 260 AH flooded lead acid battery bank. I also have a Renogy battery monitor. The system is intended to allow full time operation of an undercounter refrigerator while the boat is on it’s mooring. The system is operating as intended. The battery monitor indicates 100% battery capacity by early afternoon even on fully overcast days. I am very happy.

    Needs better instructions

Posted by Dominic on Nov 18th 2022

The quality cannot be understated however as someone who's never worked with electronics and was under the assumption the instructions would be helpful in assisting the set up I was wrong. The instructions include everything you need to know about the control box but not a lick about proper instalation into the box or connecting your battery to the solar panels and the panels to eachother for the price I paid for a no doubt quality system I would like to see at least 5 more pages of instructions on how to connect everything and what everything should look like when put together and what to look for in improper instalation.

    Great system

Posted by Rich on Oct 7th 2022

Fairly easy to install. Just got back from a 10 day hunting trip and I didn’t need to run the generator the whole time. So far a great product. The only complaint was all the wire leads are fairly short. It limits your options on how you position the panels on the roof. I also had to buy longer wire to run from the charge control to the battery. But over all The system works great and has been a good investment

Great Kit!!! Need option for longer wires

Posted by Matt on Aug 26th 2022

Such a great starter kit. Arrived perfect! Panels are doing great, actually pulled 415 watts on my rv yesterday with the panels angled at the correct degree to the south. Charge controller is awesome and all wires and hookups work great. Two things to note: the charge controller on the app will read out what the controller is converting at that moment for your batteries current needs. Can be confusing to think you’re only getting 2 amps when you have 79 volts and 200-300 watts - but it’s likely because your batteries are charged and it’s just sending all that is needed. Second, if you have a 5th wheel or longer trailer, the PV wires from the panels to the controller WILL NOT be long enough. I order 40ft and it was perfect. Prob about 6-8 ft left over. Wish that was an optional upgrade at checkout.

    Great kit!! Everything you need.

Posted by James on Jul 26th 2022

I don't usually write reviews, but I figured I would in this case: The main reason I purchased this kit is because you can actually call Renogy, and they actually have someone to answer the phone who is eager to answer questions and assist in tech advise. To me, that's huge! Anyways, I installed this 3 years ago for my off-grid tiny beach house in Mexico. It has functioned perfectly and is holding up great. The only maintenance I've performed is just cleaning the panels. This system is small, but perfect for a low voltage setup (like tiny home or RV) - my home is all 12v, with a small inverter for light AC needs. The kit was easy to install, and came with everything I needed. I fabricated a simple rack for the panels (see pic). For batteries, and purchased 4 "VMAX" 6V (225Ah) AGM Deep Cycle Batteries from Amazon (connected them in series and parallel - see pic). I couldn't be happier with this system - Thanks Renogy.

    Great Solar Battery backup system

Posted by Bryan on Jun 22nd 2022

Great Product. Support was awesome to talk to to figure out a few items. I use it for a Solar Battery backup system if I lose power to run my mini fridge, sump pump and freezer. I added 2 - 200AH 12 volt AGM Batteries and a 2000 watt inverter. I think they should sell as a package, but everybody's needs are different I guess. The only thing I would recommend is that people use a watt meter for (over time) calculations. you really need to do the math on what your appliances use and over time what your needs are.
