1. What do I need to complete my off-grid solar power system ?

A solar panel has to be connected to a charge controller to regulate current, and a battery to store the electrical power. You will need adapter kit cables to wire the solar panel(s) and charge controller, and tray cables connecting the charge controller to a deep-cycle battery.

2. What does off-grid and on-grid mean ?

On-grid simply means solar power equipment (array or solar panel) is connected to the electrical grid, while off-grid refers to systems that are not connected to the grid and therefore store the generated power for later use. Off-grid systems are not affected by grid blackouts.
3. Why is my solar panel under producing ?

Solar panel performance may be hindered for a number of reasons. Most commonly environmental conditions such as indirect sunlight, temperature rise, cloudy sky, and dirt and stain build up on the top glass will cause a reduced power output.
4. How should I connect solar panels in my electrical circuit (series vs parallel)?

Solar panels can be connected in series or in parallel to meet your electrical circuit size and power demand. Connecting solar panels in series will have the effect of adding up their operating voltage output, while system current output will be the same as that for one panel. While, connecting solar panels in parallel will have a different effect; individual panels operating current output will add up to be the system output current, while system output voltage will be the same as the output voltage of one solar panel. To meet the optimum power output and system rating for your power system, you can use both parallel and series connections.
5. How many solar panels do I need ?

The best way to gauge how many solar panels you need, is to understand and define the power load needed from this system. Power is measured in Watts, and capacity is commonly measured in Watt-hours (multiplying power output in watts by the required number of hours of operation multiplied by a safety factor of 1.5-2). Therefore, it is wise to size your battery bank first based on the minimum required capacity, and accordingly decide how many panels or how much power input is needed.
6. Can I add more solar panels to the Rover 40A and expand my system power output?

Yes, more solar panels can be added to this system to increase the power output. The Rover 60A has a maximum PV input current of 60A, the maximum input voltage is 150VDC at 25℃ and 140VDC at -25℃, and maximum input solar power of 800W at 12V or 1600W at 24Vor 2400W at 36V or 3200W at 48V. You can wire more solar panels in series / in parallel to achieve larger power output, however you are limited by the maximum input voltage and current the charge controller can handle. It is safer to build a system operating at around 90% of the rated voltage and current to ensure there is a tolerance for any system overvoltage or overcurrent.
7. Will this solar kit power my AC unit ?

In order to determine what size solar kit is appropriate, you must first define the total load to be expected of the solar power system. Most manufacturers will publish a specification sheet of the AC unit online and will include a nameplate sticker on the AC body. Both can be used to determine the actual power rating of the AC. BTU is a common measuring unit for energy in AC and water heater products, however we are intrested in the energy rate, or simply power. Power will be listed in units of Watts, and can be used to determine the total load resulting from running the intended AC unit. Multiply the power rating recorded in watts by the total number of hours of operation intended, to obtain the total watt-hours. Divide the total watt-hours by the peak sun hours in the location of installation, and multiply by a safety factor of 1.5-2, to obtain the total number of watts your panels should produce to power the air conditioner load. The total power load can be divided by the power output of one panel to obtain the number of panels needed.
8. When do I need an inverter ?

If you intend to use this solar power kit as a power supply for home appliances (e.g. coffee maker, TV, etc.), then you will need an inverter to convert the output voltage from a 12 VDC system to a 120V AC output socket. Renogy offers a variety of inverter products to suit your unique system and meet your power demand.
9. What does the 12V/24V in the product title of the solar panel mean? Why is it different from the value on the label/specification sheet of the solar panel?

The 12V/24V in product titles (ex. 100W 12V Monocrystalline Solar panel) does not refer to the actual voltage (Voc or Vmp) of the solar panels, but rather to the voltage of the solar system or energy storage system to which the panel is best suited. The voltage of the solar panel must be higher than the solar system voltage.

    Very productive panels.

Posted by Harry on Sep 6th 2022

I purchased the 600 watt panels to run lights, and a fan, when I installed them and connected a battery, I learned I can run power tools, and lights, retaining 100% charge in my automotive battery if the sun is shining. Very easy to install and connect, only if you understand basic electricity.

    Beat all expectations!

Posted by Mike on Sep 16th 2021

I got the 12v/600w with 3 lithium iron batteries. I mounted the solar panels on my partially shaded garage roof and I get about 3 hours of peak sun each day. I connected to the charge controller load output a 12 volt DC freezer that runs at about 4.5 amps at 50 watts. Through the night the battery drops from 13.4 volts to 13.1 volts and recharges completely during the day. Much less power consumption than I anticipated. The kit is not perfect. There is a complete lacking in instructions. They could have provided a diagram. Instead you must rely on the internet which depending the diagrams provided by renogy.com there are several different examples. Example: The 600 watt kit comes with a 15 amp inline fuse but there is no mention in of it in the 600 watt diagram. It is however shown in the 800 watt diagram. Also there are many necessary cables are not included. I would have expected a complete cable assembly after spending more than $3,000 but would have been satisfied if they just suggested the cables needed. There are no ethernet cables, battery interconnect cables or inverter cables included. I realized this after the initial purchase and had to wait an additional 2 weeks for the next order to arrive before I could install the system. The BT module is nice but there is absolutely no directions or explanation for the information provided. I'm hesitant to say exactly how well my system is running because the information provided by the BT is misleading. Example: In the solar panel output data fields, the BT says my system is producing 18 amps during peak sunlight. Not only does this exceed the rated performance of the solar panels, but I also have a 15 amp inline fuse that should have burnt out by now. The YouTube tutorials are getting better but still very limited in information. Considering the videos are the ONLY source for information they should be more comprehensive. I was originally going to use custom make top-of-pole mount for the solar panels using slotted angle aluminum available at any hardware store. Unfortunately the solar panel mounting holes are spaced at an odd distance apart that would not align with the more than 10 different standard size aluminum brackets readily available. They could have made the holes on an even inch center to center or just simply made more holes either in the solar panel frame or in the Z brackets. As it is, the only option for pole mounting is to either drill your own holes or purchase one of the outrageous priced mounting systems from other vendors. Hence, why I mounted on a partial shaded garage instead. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and will continue to buy more again from Renogy. The customer service is good if you have the time to be put on hold.

    Not a “boxed” kit

Posted by Doug Barnett on Aug 18th 2021

As a “kit” I expected a pallet or carton or boxed with everything in it but came in separate pieces. I received everything over a couple weeks, well packaged in good shape.
